Canon's workhorse standard zoom.
The Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM is the lens that does the most work on an RF body. It's the same range every working standard zoom covers — wide enough for a room, long enough for a portrait — held at a constant f/2.8 the whole way. On a wedding day, a corporate shoot, or a commercial B-roll session, it's the lens that stays mounted between setups and gets the shots you didn't plan for.
What sets Canon's version apart from the other standard zooms in this class is that it has optical image stabilization built in: up to five stops by Canon's CIPA-rated figure. That's not a small thing. Handheld video in a dim reception hall, a run-and-gun walkthrough of a property, a quick handheld pickup shot with no time to build a rig — the IS is doing real work in all of those, and it does it whether or not the body underneath has stabilization of its own.

Close focus is the underrated feature.
At 0.30x maximum magnification and a 0.21m minimum focus distance at the wide end, this zoom gets closer than most standard zooms do. In practice that means rings, product detail, a watch face, hands on a keyboard, a plate at a tasting — shots that would otherwise mean stopping to swap to a macro. On a day where the schedule is tight and the detail list is long, being able to grab those without a lens change is the difference between shooting the shot list and shooting most of it.
Handling notes.
At 900g it is a substantial lens, noticeably heavier than the current mirrorless-era competition, and that weight is something to account for on a gimbal or over a long handheld day. In exchange you get L-series weather sealing — useful in a Pacific Northwest winter — and Nano USM autofocus that is fast for stills and quiet and smooth enough for video. The customizable control ring can be assigned to aperture, ISO, shutter or exposure compensation, so exposure changes happen at the lens instead of on the camera body. The 82mm filter thread matches the common size across most fast zooms, which keeps our ND and polarizer kit consistent.
